Tasting Notes

Enticing aromas of vine-ripened wild blackberry and dark cherry mingle with dried strawberry and subtle traces of peppercorn and toffee. A luscious silken entry reveals concentrated flavors of juicy black raspberry, Bing cherry, and huckleberry. Layers of cocoa, coffee, creamy caramel, vanillin oak, and freshly ground black pepper add richness and depth.

Winemaker's Notes

For 23 vintages, our acclaimed Heritage Vines field blend has come entirely from the oldest part of our historic Alegría Vineyards, located close to the Russian River. When the vineyard was planted in 1890, it was standard practice to interplant multiple grape varieties to be harvested together. Over the years, the wine growers who preceded us developed the blend that is unique to our vineyard. Our 129-year old vines reacted positively to the end of a four-year drought by setting a heavy crop that we hand-thinned for quality and balance. 2019’s generally mild growing season gave us optimal flavors and aromas. Native yeasts completed the fermentation. We barrel-aged the wine sur lies for 17 months, in a combination of French oak barrels carefully selected from different coopers to meld and elevate the flavors of this complex age-worthy Zin.
